I often ride the bike path through Lachine and while aware of the local history, never really stopped to ‘smell the roses’. Decided to change that yesterday after reading about the conflict there in August 1689 during the Beaver Wars. The ride would be an ideal family outing or a bit of a break during a longer ride. From East to West… 1) The CP train bridge. There is a short trail down to the water with spectacular views. 2) Across the street is a park. I believe this would have been the location of Fort Remy. There is a replica of a church in the park with a plaque that references Remy. 3) The LaSalle windmill is quite spectacular. Is some restoration work going on at present. As you top the hill approaching the Lachine Canal there is a museum on the path. At the intersection with the canal there is an opportunity to enjoy the river riding the loop around the peninsula. 4) The fur trading post. Worth a visit!!! Great folks from Parks Canada there to answer any questions. 5) Plaque (out for repair) commemorating the conflict back in 1689. Referred to as the Lachine Massacre. 6) You can’t miss the spectacular church from any angle 7) Memorial for Fort Rolland. 8) We end at the lighthouse… or do we take in one more attraction;) Enjoy the scenic views of the canal along the way.

Walk quickly (or run) for your life along the canal pathway because above you are massive silos of an agricultural nature supreme in their display. Then stop, look up. How many kilos of grain passed through these rusting silos in their day? It's perhaps a rhetorical question ...

This is very relaxing! Bring a book or sun bath! Dip your legs into the river! Lots of green and birds! Not many squirrels or other animals! Not many animals but very quiet! Public washrooms a bit further on the main trail!

A fantastic place to visit just west of the old port. Usually it is more tranquil here than in the touristy spots— with nice link ups to the BIXI. There is also a bar / resto right on the canal, as well as a spa and an ice cream store. Some awe inspiring views of the old elevators and canal locks can be found too. Public bathrooms are here too for your convenience.

Berge des Coursiers isn't far from the Montreal Old Port Complex, but cannot be considered part of it. The fastest way to get there is to cross the bridge that leads to the Bota Spa and turn right. The Berge is just a few steps further. The little manmade lake has a lot of charm. The scenery changes in accordance with the season. If you're so inclined - and if the season and weather allow it - bring a picnic basket and plan to spend a couple of hours. The soothing sound of a small waterfall will help you relax and forget about the city that's just a couple of steps away.
